In a public lecture for Zabludowicz Collection in London, Dr James MacDowell discusses the romantic 'happy ending' in Hollywood cinema - its motifs, meanings and potential mutability. With reference to sequences from classic and lesser-known films spanning Hollywood's history, the talk explores both the convention itself and its notorious reputation, as well as the influence of the latter upon the former. Cowritten with James Zborowski, MacDowell's latest esssay 'The Aesthetics of "So Bad it's Good": Value, Intention, and The Room' appears in Intensities (Autumn/Winter 2013, pp. 1-30).
