AI and computational modelling for resilient cyber-physical systems

This PhD will explore how artificial intelligence (AI) and computational modelling can make modern infrastructure more resilient to cyberattacks and disruptions. Possible applications include connected transport, electric vehicles, charging infrastructure and energy systems. The aim is to develop tools that predict risks, assess their impact and support effective responses. The research will be tailored to the successful candidate鈥檚 interests and skills.

AI-enhanced computational modelling for fracture prediction

Can artificial intelligence (AI) help us predict when and how materials break? This PhD will combine AI and advanced computational modelling to develop faster and more accurate methods for predicting cracks and material failure. The research will explore physics-based and machine learning approaches to improve simulations, reduce computational costs and support the design of safer, stronger and more reliable materials and structures.

ICON: Intelligent semantic Communication for future Optical Networks

ICON moves beyond accurate bit transmission towards the semantic and effectiveness levels described by Shannon and Weaver. It will use AI to identify and transmit the meaning that matters, reducing unnecessary data while improving the efficiency and reliability of optical networks. The PhD student will also participate in the EU Horizon Europe SMART project and collaborate with international academic and industrial partners.

MEDIA: Machine leEarning enhanceD optical Integrated sensing and communicAtion

MEDIA enables a single optical system to transmit data while simultaneously sensing objects, motion, position, and environmental changes. This PhD project will combine optical technologies, signal processing, and AI to develop shared waveforms and intelligent algorithms for reliable communication and accurate sensing. Applications may include smart energy systems, industrial automation, and environmental monitoring.

Distributed Machine Learning for Collaborative Robotics

How can a team of robots learn, reason, and collaborate intelligently when communication is unreliable, bandwidth is limited, and computing resources are constrained? Distributed machine learning is enabling fleets of robots to share knowledge, coordinate decisions, and accomplish complex tasks without relying on a centralised AI system.

Low-Latency Telepresence Robotics

What if you could physically control a robot thousands of miles away — or even on another planet — as if you were standing right there? Telepresence robotics is turning this science fiction into reality, enabling remote surgery, hazardous site inspection, and assistive care through immersive mixed-reality (XR) interfaces.

Identifying and Mitigating Power Grid Stability Risks from Artificial Intelligence Data Centres

Artificial intelligence (AI)-based technologies are being adopted across various sectors at an unprecedented scale. However, the computing resources required to run these algorithms, i.e., the AI data centers, are extremely power hungry, thus significantly increasing the burden on the electrical grid. The proposed PhD project will develop analytical methods to identify the threats from AI data centers to power grids and develop solutions to mitigate the risks.
