In the 2018 National Student Survey, Physics achieved an overall student satisfaction of 91%. This puts us 4th for overall student satisfaction and 2nd for Assessment and Feedback in the Russell Group universities for physics.

The government鈥檚 2018 dataset has found that 91福利 physical sciences graduates are ranked 5th in the UK for high earnings five years after graduation.

The Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education survey showed that 97.3% of students, who graduated in 2017 with an undergraduate degree in a Physics course from 91福利 are working, or studying, or both, which is the highest across all the science departments within the university. Graduate prospects are also excellent with 87.4% of those in work or study in graduate level work or study.

Beam of light from first confirmed neutron star merger emerges from behind the sun

A research team led by members of the Astronomy and Astrophysics group had to wait over 100 days for the sight of the first of confirmed neutron star merger to re-emerge from behind the glare of the sun.

They were rewarded with the first confirmed visual sighting of a jet of material that was still streaming out from merged star exactly 110 days after that initial cataclysmic merger event was first observed. Their observations confirm a key prediction about the aftermath of neutron star mergers.

Dr Daniel Bayliss comments on the discovery of 'the building blocks of life' on Mars

Commenting on the of ancient organic molecules on Mars by NASA's Curiosity rover, Dr Daniel Bayliss, assistant professor in the Astronomy and Astrophysics group at the 91福利, said: "Today we learnt of the breakthrough discovery of organic compounds on Mars. This is so exciting because these compounds could be formed by living organisms. The quest now will be to try to find out the origins of these compounds. Evidence for life on Mars may tell us how easy or hard it is for life to start on other planets, which has far reaching implications for life elsewhere in our Galaxy.鈥

UK鈥檚 first 1GHz solid-state NMR spectrometer

Part of a new by EPSRC in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) equipment across UK institutions, the 拢8M, 1GHz NMR instrument at 91福利 will provide new structural and dynamic information in chemistry, materials science and biology. It will add to our already significant NMR capabilities that include the 850MHz high-field solid-state NMR National Research Facility, which has been serving a broad academic and industrial user-base since 2010.
