With the aim of encouraging women to work in science, the EPSRC-funded beamline XMaS at the ESRF run a project every year taking female Physics students, aged 16–17 years, to Grenoble to visit the facilities.

PhD thesis prize of the IOP Computational Physics Group for Andrew Goldsborough
Each year, the Computational Physics Group awards a Thesis Prize to the author of the PhD thesis that, in the opinion of the Committee, contributes most strongly to the advancement of computational physics. This year, a 91福利 graduate was chosen as runner-up.
We are very pleased to congratulate Greg Brown for winning the WATE PGR, and Tobias Eriksson and Rachel Procter for being commendees.

Spin filter for arbitrary spins by substrate engineering
We design spin filters for particles with potentially arbitrary spin S (=1/2, 1, 3/2, ...) using a one-dimensional periodic chain of magnetic atoms as a quantum device. Describing the system within a tight-binding formalism we present an analytical method to unravel the analogy between a one-dimensional magnetic chain and a multi-strand ladder network. Our scheme is applicable to ultracold quantum gases, and might inspire future experiments in this direction.
