From quasars to ULXs: how black holes affect their surroundings
The enormous energy released as a black hole grows its mass can have a determining effect on its environment. The scaling relations between supermassive black holes and host galaxy bulges give a clear indication of this. In small galaxies, stellar-mass black hole accretion can produce radical changes. The past decade has seen major progress in understanding these effects. I will describe this, and what we hope to learn in the future.
