CMP Seminar - Je-Geun Park: Structure and spin dynamics of multiferroic BiFeO3

Multiferroic materials exhibiting a coexistence of magnetic and ferroelectric ground states have drawn considerable attention. Work on multiferroic materials has included studies of the underlying origin of this unusual behaviour in naturally occurring materials and artificially synthesized thin films, as well as attempts to discover or rediscover new multiferroics.

BiFeO3 is arguably one of the most interesting multiferroic materials. It has been extensively investigated for potential applications as its magnetic and ferroelectric transitions both occur above room temperature: TN = 650 K and TC = 1050 K. Moreover, BiFeO3 has a interesting incommensurate magnetic phase transition with an extremely long period of 650 Å. Over the past few years there have been a number of studies on BiFeO3. Largely thanks to this work, we now have an extremely detailed picture of the physical properties of this material.

In this talk, I will present our results [1-4] obtained from high resolution neutron scattering experiments on this fascinating material.
