It was only well into the space age that the `solar constant' was found to be inconstant. While its changes appear insignificant (they are of the order of 0.1% over the solar cycle), they have been linked to changes in the Earth's climate on time scales of centuries. This influence is usually ascribed to changes in the solar UV radiation that affect the processes of ozone destruction and creation in the Earth's stratosphere. I will briefly review measurements of solar variability, describe how we model solar variablity on time scales ranging from days to centuries, and what this might tell us about stellar variability.
