Research Councils UK, in collaboration with the Indonesia Science Fund, the Ministry of Research Technology and Higher Education Republic of Indonesia (Ristekdikti), the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, the Department of Science and Technology Philippines, and the Thailand Research Fund, under the Newton Fund programme, invite applications for their UK – Southeast Asia small scale research partnerships call. This aims to deliver research that will provide new insights and stimulate creative thinking to tackle real world problems, and it will contribute to the economic development and welfare of Southeast Asia. Collaborative research should address the following topics:

•creative economy and cultural heritage;

•energy, food, water-environment nexus;

•mental health;

•capacity building in big data and technology development through astronomy;

•skills for using large facilities.

The longer term objective is to establish sustainable collaborations between UK and Southeast Asian researchers that will increase the competitiveness of these researchers in gaining funds for excellent research in future funding calls, either under the Newton Fund or through other routes. Small scale grants are not intended to support a logical progression of an already established research project or other types of ongoing work; therefore, the nature of these awards will be more exploratory.

All projects must have a UK partner and a Southeast Asian partner from one of the participating countries. The UK principal investigator and research organisation must be eligible to apply according to the relevant research council’s guidance. Early career researchers are particularly encouraged to apply.

Funding is available for one to two years for flexible short-term projects.
