Laser Modification of Vanadate Glasses

We report on our investigations of the effects of 785 nm light irradiation on lead and barium vanadate glasses. Modifications to the surface, including crystallization, were measured as a function of laser power and sample composition. Scanning electron microscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy, XRF, atomic force microscopy, and even some micro-EXAFS were used in an effort to understand the mechanisms responsible for the structural and topographical changes. Two stage irradiation.where the sample is exposed to low power laser light at first, followed by modification at higher powers.also yielded some key insight into the nature of the changes.
