"Excited charged carrier dynamics in silicon nano-structures investigated by ultrafast pump-probe experiments"
Design and optimisation of semiconductor light emitting, photovoltaic and electronic devices requires established models and information about injected charge carrier temperature, mobility, energy relaxation and recombination dynamics. However, the information available for macroscopic devices is frequently inadequate for devices approaching nanoscale regime. I will discuss the results of ultrafast optical pump-probe experiments on silicon nano-pillars, embedded silicon nano-crystals and porous silicon. I will show that the carrier relaxation dynamics in these samples is different from the bulk counterpart. I will review the influence of environment and boundaries on the dynamics of carriers’ energy relaxation.
