Medical imaging in the form of positron emission tomography (PET) has been available for more than forty years but only in the last decade has it become a widely available diagnostic technique within the UK. Currently all PET imaging in the UK is carried out on PET/CT devices, PET detectors with combined x-ray computerised tomography (CT) imaging capabilities; the exception is the recently introduced PET/MR (Magnetic Resonance) device installed in a London hospital.
The radionuclide and equipment development underpinning PET imaging, the imaging environment and techniques, diagnostic strengths and weaknesses and future developments will be discussed. Some example images will be shown.
