Abstract:
Can magnetic fields influence chemical reactions? Could there be biological effects of exposure to weak magnetic fields? These are the types of question that Spin Chemistry deals with, examining the effects of electron and nuclear spins, and magnetic interactions more generally, on the rates and yields of chemical processes. In this talk I’ll provide an overview of the key mechanisms studied by spin chemists, recent advances in understanding the spin chemistry of bird migration and radiofrequency magnetic field effects more generally, and how spin-chemistry may be used to provide sensitivity enhancements in NMR spectroscopy.
