Faster than light? Daniel Scully
Faster than light?
Has Einstein's theory of Special Relativity been broken?
Particle Physics has been hitting the headlines recently with news that particles produced at CERN may have been seen travelling faster than the speed of light... something forbidden by Albert Einstein's theory or relativity, which has become the foundation of modern physics since it was first proposed over a century ago. The culprits are the mysterious particles known as neutrinos and it's not the first time they've brought up surprise results!
In this special one-off Christmas Lecture we'll introduce neutrinos, learning about their exciting and colourful history and the reasons researchers are still studying them today before moving onto the latest headline grabbing results. We'll also learn about the dire consequences this result could have for our current theories and explore some of the wild and wonderful physics it could open up!
The talk will be aimed firmly at a general audience and no prior knowledge is assumed. Everyone is welcome!
