The search for magnetic monopoles has long captured the imagination of physicists. However experimental searches for cosmic monopoles have not yet been successful. In the last few years a new idea has arisen – that of the emergent magnetic monopole in the condensed matter system known as “spin ice”. While falling short of all the properties of cosmic monopoles, magnetic monopoles in spin ice are nevertheless fascinating in their own right, and of potential practical value via their controllable currents (“magnetricity”). This workshop will bring together unique international expertise in the area, to explore the new physics of emergent magnetic monopoles and particularly its overlap with ice physics and electrochemistry.
