Nuclear
fusion - the energy source of the sun and other stars
- is among the very few future options for environmentally
compatible, large-scale energy production. The technique still
requires, however, long-term research and development. Advances in
the understanding of magnetically confined high-temperature
plasmas and of plasma-material interactions have recently led to the
decision to construct the international ITER experiment. This device
is intended to demonstrate the physical and, in part,
technological feasibility of fusion energy production under power
plant conditions.
