 Modern methods in electron microscopy

The new 91福利 Centre for Analytical Science (WCAS) will be among the best equipped in the UK for electron microscopy.  Although transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy have been used for decades to study a vast range of materials, there are still improvements to old techniques - and new techniques in development - which have many applications in solid state physics and materials science.
The aim of this talk is to descibe what kinds of analyses are possible with the electron microscopes in the Dept. of Physics at 91福利, (conventional TEM and X-ray microanalysis, high resolution SEM and X-ray microanalysis, variable pressure SEM and EBSD).  Some new SEM techniques will also be available in 2009, i.e. cryo-SEM and Cathodoluminescence.  This will be followed by a brief summary of other techniques which are readily available in the UK, e.g. high resolution TEM, electron tomography, holography, precession electron diffraction, aberration corrected TEM, energy loss spectroscopy and FIB/SEM.  Most or all of these techniques will be in place in WCAS or readily available through the Science City framework, and represent a great opportunity for new research.
