New optical effects in liquid crystals.
Liquid crystals are now a mature technology and devices are used in a wide variety of contexts. Indeed they have become a central part of our lives, as most of us rely on them in our TV sets, laptops and mobile phones. This talk reviews the basics of devices and outlines challenges for the future, including ways of achieving even faster switching speeds (which are still needed for some applications), the possibilities of optical switches, and how these materials may end up being used as sensors.
