The British Council and the Newton Fund invite proposals for their Newton institutional links grants. These support collaborations between the UK, Egypt, Thailand and Turkey to initiate and develop research and innovation collaborations between academic groups, departments and institutions, and encourage these collaborations to work with non-academic organisations and individuals to support the exchange of research and innovation expertise and the translation of research knowledge into tangible benefits. The aim is to establish local hubs for UK-partner country activity in a particular area, enabling engagement from the wider research and innovation community. Proposals are invited in five panel areas including biological and medical sciences, engineering and physical sciences, environment, agriculture and food sciences, social sciences and arts and humanities.

All proposals must clearly articulate a plausible pathway to positive impact on low- and middle income populations within a three-15 year timeframe. All proposals must include one principal applicant from the UK and one partner country and have the support of the home and partner institution. Principal applicants must be leading or established researchers and be permanently employed at a HEI or a non-profit research organisation. Applicants are encouraged to include in their proposals associated partners affiliated with other research or HEIs, technology transfer offices, not-for-profit organisations, for-profit or commercial organisations.

Grants are worth between £50,000 and £300,000 over a period of up to two years, and may cover costs for travel, organising meetings, seminars and training, equipment and consumables.
