The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council invites proposals for its call for feasibility studies on automating science discovery. This supports early-stage feasibility studies that explore the application of artificial intelligence technologies to aid and accelerate discovery in fundamental physical sciences. The aim is to encourage collaboration and combine expertise from the AI research base and expertise from the physical sciences to identify the potential for AI to impact on fundamental discovery science, and the obstacles that need to be overcome in order for this to deliver. Proposals must be multidisciplinary, be at the cutting edge and represent the state-of-the-art in both the AI and physical science components. Projects must also consider issues relating to responsible innovation to ensure that the political and societal implications of automation are considered and usefully communicated.
All proposals must represent a collaboration between academics in AI and in the physical sciences. Applicants must be based at a UK HEI or an eligible research council institute or independent research organisation. All proposals must be within ESPRC’s remit. At the expression of interest stage, each applicant may only be PI on at most one proposal, and Co-Investigator on at most one proposal. There are no limits to the number of applications from particular institutions.
Up to four grants are available, worth up to £250,000 each over 18 months. Funding may cover postdoctoral research assistant time, consumables, travel and subsistence and any other directly incurred costs required for the proposal. Equipment is not available.
