Richard Dendy (UKAEA/91福利)The UK Nuclear Deterrent: Timescales and the UK Science Base This talk addresses the interplay between scientific, technicaland policy issues arising in the UK's nuclear weapons programme. There is more information in the public domain than is sometimes realised: for example, the government's White Paper on the future of the UK's nuclear deterrent, Cm 6994 published in December 2006, and the paper on warhead science published by O'Nions, Pitman and Marsh, Nature 415 853 in 2002. This seminar offers a synthesis which is timely in relation to future UK policy choices and current international developments. It is a personal perspective that does not represent the views of any particular organisation. In addition to his work in plasma physics at Culham and 91福利, Richard Dendy serves on government bodies that provide independent advice on activities that support the UK's nuclear deterrent: the Nuclear Research Advisory Council of MoD, and the Internal Peer Review Group of MoD's Strategic Weapons Project Team. He is also a member of: the Physical Sciences Strategy Advisory Team of EPSRC, Editor of the journal "Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion", and was recently appointed a Commissioner of the Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission.
