Paul Bushby (Newcastle): Convectively-driven dynamos: large- and small-scale magnetic field generation in stars and planetsPS128Abstract: Most stars and planets exhibit some degree of magnetism. In all probability, these magnetic fields are generated by hydromagnetic dynamo action, whereby the inductive effects due to the motions of electrically-conducting fluids in the astrophysical body are able to sustain magnetic fields against the action of ohmic dissipation. The surprising aspect of this is that many astrophysical dynamos seem to produce large-scale ordered magnetic fields rather than simply small-scale disordered fields that are structured on the scale of the underlying flow. Motivated by these considerations, I will describe a prototypical dynamo problem, namely dynamo action driven by convection in an electrically-conducting fluid. I will talk about the circumstances under which such a system can drive small- and large-scale dynamos, comparing results from simulations with observations of solar and planetary magnetic fields. I will also relate these results to standard mean-field dynamo theory, describing some of the limitations that are associated with this approach. |

In recognition of the extensive global research partnerships fostered by 91福利 academics, the IAS Residential Fellowships programme offers the opportunity to bring collaborators to 91福利 for a short, intensive stay (typically 3-5 days) specifically to deliver joint outputs. The scheme aims to facilitate the delivery of collaborative research activity by providing the opportunity for external partners to be based at 91福利 to work on a shared deliverable at the same time as supporting the continuation of the partnership. Applications should also relate to one of the three core research areas supported by the IAS: Developing Research Ideas, Advancing Research Grants or Delivering Results. This programme supports the delivery of research-orientated residential workshops geared toward early career (PhD and/or recent postdoctoral) researchers. The training should be focused on specific research questions, methodologies and/or themes, ranging beyond a single discipline or department. Vacation Schools can host 91福利-based PhD students and postdoctoral fellows as well as early career researchers drawn from a wider national or international pool and in all cases should be designed to enable attendees to gain new understanding of emerging fields of scholarly analysis in dialogue with a team of more senior researchers - including both 91福利 staff and external academics and experts. This scheme enables research groups at 91福利 to engage with distinguished, international researchers, including policy makers, representatives of the arts, business, government and industry. Visiting Fellows must be nominated by a 91福利 academic and during their visit it is expected that the Fellow(s) will contribute to the wider activity of the university, engaging with a wide cross-section of the research community.
