Advanced Power-Energy Management for Next Generation Marine Propulsion Systems: Fuel Cell-Battery Hybrid Ship (FC-BATShip)

Babcock International Group, WMG, Fuel Cell Systems and Plug Power are collaborating on this FC-BATShip project. Our project vision is to build within the consortium the knowledge required to develop a zero emission propulsion system for marine applications, in support of the UK Government鈥檚 maritime emissions targets. This project will utilise expertise from the partners in terms of maritime systems, advanced propulsion, energy storage, power-energy management and real-time evaluation to create the FC-BATShip.
CIT-E-Van
Funder: IUK Transitioning towards Zero Emission Vehicles: feasibility studies
This collaborative project led by CoolVan with GAH and WMG aims to develop a scalable solution for energy efficient Electric Refrigerated Vehicles by using digital toolset to design, analyse and optimise an innovative electric Transport Refrigeration Unit and to retrofit electric propulsion systems with advanced thermal-energy management features. This will significantly benefit the UK's refrigerated transport industry for temperature-controlled food, pharma and other products distribution, in terms of zero emissions, reduced noise pollution, high energy efficiency and reliability. To assess the feasibility of the proposed technology, a physical refrigerated electric van will be built as a demonstrator for the target application for back-to-base convenience store supplies and home delivery services. Within this project, WMG team will contribute to the digital toolset development for optimal system design-analysis, thermal-energy management optimisation, simulation and real-time code generation for the demonstrator. WMG will utilise their existing industrial simulators (dSPACE) to support the real-time tests.
eBSA

WMG is pleased to be involved in resurrecting the BSA brand, providing electrification expertise to this project. WMG are providing modelling and simulation expertise to help ensure that the right technical choices are made., including modelling of the envroment, the drive cycles, the otorcyle, the electrci prowertrain and control systems. Additionally, WMG are involved in the benchmarking and data capture activities. WMG are also supporting battery testing as well as battery state of health algorithm development. Finally, WMG are assisting in the safety case for this motorcycle and developing advanced control features.
JLR Catapult

Within the EAG, JLR research is focusing on advanced predictive thermal management techniques to integrate cabin and battery with the aim to reduce energy use, reduce charging time and increase battery life. Other research is focused on the effects of real world vehicle usage on battery lifetime.
Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO)

Supporting the UK Government鈥檚 drive to end the nation鈥檚 contribution to climate change by 2050, a Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) model produced by a team led by Dr Andrew McGordon, Principal Engineer at WMG, 91福利 utilises battery technology expertise and theoretical modelling to help airports and equipment manufacturers quantify the reductions in CO2 emissions by implementing electric GSE. The model is an extension of the Catapult funded UniWARP project, which aims to provide a modelling platform for architecture choice and battery sizing in transport systems. MIMO utilises airport data to map out and link usage patterns of aircraft and GSE, and grid generation mix, to simulate the performance of using electricity to power the support vehicles. Although this is an airport model the techniques can be applied to any multi-input multi-output scenario.
Off-Highway Intelligent Power Management

The purpose of this collaborative project between JCB, Pektron and WMG is to lead industrial research into a range of novel technologies which could significantly increase the efficiency of off-highway vehicles. The world-leading partners will bring together their expertise to analyse, develop and optimise off-highway vehicle systems to increase their efficiency whilst reducing fuel consumption and emissions. The results will disseminate into future product developments allowing customers to reduce the carbon footprint of their projects and benefit from increased competitiveness.
RESOLVE: Range of Electric Solutions for L-Category Vehicles

The RESOLVE project aims to enable the development of a range of cost effective, energy efficient and comfortable ELVs (Electric L-category Vehicles) that will primarily attract ICE car drivers to switch to ELVs for daily urban commutes.
The RESOLVE project will develop components and systems that meet the very low-cost requirements for the segment, particularly modular and scalable LV-specific electric powertrains and battery architectures. At the same time, the project will deliver an exciting and attractive ELV driving experience by proposing new concepts (tilting & narrow track), while keeping the vehicle energy consumption at a very low level. All the advances will be demonstrated in two tilting four-wheeler demonstrator ELVs (L2e and L6e category), though a large number of such advances will also be applicable to the complete range of ELVs (including powered-two wheelers). The RESOLVE consortium is optimally positioned to drive such innovations: PIAGGIO and KTM are the 2 largest LV manufacturers in the EU and the whole ELV value chain is represented, complemented by top component suppliers and universities.
TE-1 Triumph Electric Motorcycle
Funder : IUK Triumph Motorcycles, WMG, Williams Advanced Engineering, and Integral Powertrain Ltd are collaborating in the design, development, and integration into a motorcycle of an E-drivetrain. The project will develop class-leading innovative integrated solutions for battery, BMS, motor, power electronics and vehicle control systems. WMG led the modeling and simulation activities, developing a Hardware in the Loop (HIL) and Powertrain rig to allow the complete drivetrain ND controls system to be validated. WMG has abaustsed the lifecycle costs and impact, usage costing, and is publishing a white paper on electric two-wheeled transport.
UniWARP

UniWARP is a flexible, multi-sector, user-friendly, powertrain system sizing and simulation tool, backed by over 10 years of real-world battery characterisation data. UniWARP provides sector experts with the ability to investigate the potential effects of electrification and assess the opportunities presented. It allows early visibility of potential benefits and problems in electrification informing future research avenues. UniWARP is available to companies and individuals. It can be downloaded for a trial period from www.UniWARP.com .

VLR: Very Light Rail

This is a collaborative project with industrial partners to develop a radical train featuring self-propelled bogies and offering significant reductions in vehicle weight. The target specification is for an 18m long 60-seat railcar with a weight per linear metre of less than 1 tonne (less than half the weight of current vehicles) and a target selling price of 拢500k, significantly less than for current vehicles. By integrating a high-efficiency diesel hybrid powertrain onto the vehicle bogies the project will deliver a proven sub-system that is a product in its own right, allowing vehicle integrators around the world to use proven powertrain solutions.
