Advicenow (formerly named Law for Life) is an education and information charity that aims to increase access to justice by providing everyone with an awareness of their legal rights together with the confidence and skills to assert them. We challenge injustice and inequality in our society by equipping individuals and communities to effectively navigate law-related problems, access justice, and take control of their lives.

We believe that everyone should understand their legal rights and obligations and know how to gain redress through the legal system. Yet most people struggle to cope with legal issues and often don鈥檛 know where to go for help. Free legal advice services are vastly over-subscribed and paid-for legal help is expensive. As a result, many people are unable to resolve the legal problems which affect their lives. This perpetuates and increases poverty and disadvantage in our society, negatively impacting the health and well-being of individuals and communities.

The Role

You will have the opportunity to be involved in some of the tasks listed below.

Insight and Change team:

• Undertaking and assisting colleagues to undertake research into legal issues relevant to our work, including welfare benefits, family courts, housing rights and employment.
• Carrying out literature reviews, on specific areas of law, e.g., family or benefits law, on overarching legal research themes, e.g., digital capabilities or for specific projects, e.g., the Health Justice Partnership.
• Recording findings, keeping records and accounts of the management of projects.
• Investigating and evaluating sources of data for empirical projects, e.g., Online Support and Advice Grant.
• Utilising statistical software to support empirical studies relating to law and policy.
• Supporting statistical analyses on social science data sets and reporting findings.
• Compiling or updating datasets when needed.
• Reviewing and contributing to writing academic publications, other policy reports and submissions to parliamentary committees.
• Monitoring the Advicenow website鈥檚 analytics and/or other evaluation processes.

Legal information team:

• Reviewing information categories and making recommendations for the Advicenow website in line with our inclusion criteria.
• Reviewing the information available from a particular provider against Advicenow鈥檚 inclusion criteria and making recommendations for the Advicenow website.
• Producing a checklist summarising a legal process.
• Contributing to the development of a new Advicenow guide as a panel member.
• Developing a new 鈥榢now-how鈥� including top tips and possible solutions in collaboration with a member of the Information team.
• Administrative tasks, for example, searching for email addresses for contacts.
• Updating the Advicenow 鈥楥hosen for you鈥� content and Legal advice and helplines content.
• Drafting social media posts.
• Monitoring or researching changes in the law.

Person specification

Shortlisted candidates will meet all of the essential criteria, and are likely to meet several, if not all, of the desirable criteria below.

Essential

• Student on 91福利 Law School degree course.
• Knowledge and interest in the broad range of legal and rights issues affecting the UK public.
• Enthusiasm for the development of information to increase public knowledge and understanding of the law and rights.
• Excellent writing skills in plain English, including the ability to pay close attention to detail and to summarise complex information and communicate clearly to a wide audience.
• Strong IT skills, including a thorough working knowledge of spreadsheet software packages such as Excel and Googlesheets.
• A self-motivated and flexible approach to working independently within a small team that works remotely.
• Good organisational skills, including ability to organise workload, take responsibility for particular areas of work, work on own initiative and meet agreed deadlines.
• Good verbal communication skills.
• An understanding of the difficulties faced by disadvantaged people and communities in achieving access to the law and justice.
• An understanding of equal opportunities issues and a commitment to equal opportunities in all aspects of your work.

Desirable

• Experience of the not-for-profit advice or community sector.
• Experience of using specialist research software such as R, Endnote, SPSS and NVivo.
• Experience in conducting interviews.

• Familiarity with national datasets, such as Tribunal Statistics Quarterly, Office for National Statistics or the DWP鈥檚 Stat-Xplore.

• An ability to administrate, manage and regularly update social media sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and TikTok with the intention of increasing Advicenow鈥檚 reach.
• Lived experience of the difficulties faced by disadvantaged people and communities in achieving access to the law and justice.

Application Task

As a key part of our research and evaluation process, Advicenow needs to obtain feedback from the people we help through the range of services we provide. This is not just about their satisfaction with Advicenow and the specific service they鈥檝e used, but also to help us evaluate whether we have helped them to achieve better outcomes in their legal issue and if that has helped them improve their legal capabilities.

Instructions

As part of the application process, please answer the questions below 鈥� the task should take less than 1.5 hours (including time to look at the Advicenow website)

Your answers should be expressed in bullet points rather than an essay. Draw upon any knowledge and experience you have of using research skills in a community setting.

Task

Imagine you are designing a short user feedback survey of people using information on the type of legal problems covered by our Advicenow content (https://www.advicenow.org.uk/get-help).

This user feedback survey would be situated on a page on the website. It needs to be a short survey (max 5-6 questions) that covers the range of legal problems dealt with by Advicenow and encourages more people to respond and provide us with valuable information about how the information we provide has helped them. For this task, please answer the following questions:

1) What do you need to take into consideration when designing this survey?

2) What audience do you think this should be aimed at and how will that affect the questions you ask?

3) What sort of questions are most effective in online surveys?

4) What challenges are you likely to face in obtaining feedback from Advicenow service users in this way?

5) Please tell us about any experience you have to date that you think would help you in obtaining feedback from service users. (This can include experience from within or outside your degree course.)

Please note - we don鈥檛 need you to design the survey itself, just answer the questions above as if you were.

Strategic Social Justice Internship - x 1 internship

The Strategic Social Justice Clinic (鈥楽SJC鈥�) is a joint initiative between Central England Law Centre (鈥楥ELC鈥�) and 91福利 LinC. It specialises in using Public Law and other rights-based strategies to address systemic disadvantage and achieve effective change.

The intern will:

• Work with CELC on tasks to embed and disseminate work from previous SSJC projects.
• Help in the preparation of forthcoming projects (conduct background research, gather resources, and compile data relevant to potential future projects).
• Research and gather insights on digital exclusion, including designing surveys and conducting interviews with internal teams.
• Analyse and summarise findings in a report to inform CELC鈥檚 work.
• Collaborate with the SSJC Lead to understand how research outputs can be used in potential policy influencing opportunities.

What's involved:

Week 1 and Week 2:

Finalise any outstanding clinic work

Week 3 to 8:

• Putting together an internal survey for teams here about digital exclusion and potentially conducting interviews with teams.
• Putting together an external survey to be shared with some partners/via LCN around their experience of digital exclusion. Potentially speak to LCN about work they are doing around digital divide
• Producing a short report summarising the results, both internally and externally.
• Working with SSJC Lead from CELC to understand what this work could be used for/where are potential influencing opportunities

91福利 the internship at Reprieve

The successful applicant will be supporting our US Death Penalty Team. For more than a decade, we have built a particular specialisation in issues related to lethal injection, the most common execution method in the US. Through our work, we aim to dispel the myth of the humane execution, working with allies across healthcare, business, and other sectors to end the misuse of medicines and medical technology in executions. The USDP Team is split across our London and D.C offices, providing the intern an opportunity to engage with Reprieve and Reprieve U.S. team members.

• This opportunity is an eight-week, hybrid-working fellowship, tenable from July to late September. Summer interns are expected to work full-time (37.5 hours per week), coming into the office 2 days a week. Location: London.

Role and responsibilities will vary according to the applicant鈥檚 experience, interests and the current caseload. As an organisation committed to ending extreme human rights abuses, our teams focus on a combination of legal, advocacy, media, and campaigns initiatives, and interns will be involved in all aspects of the work of the team they join. Interns will join team and cross-organisational meetings and will have opportunities to learn about the work and cases of our other teams.

• This is a paid internship at an hourly standard pay 拢13.75 + 拢1.66 holiday pay.
• Interview Date: Tuesday 26 May, 3pm - 6pm.
