National Mooting Competition Final Result
On Thursday 18 June, Elina Lin (Law) and Jonathan Martin (Politics, Philosophy, and Law) competed in the Finals Day of the prestigious ESU–Essex Court Chambers National Mooting Competition. In the semi-final they won against a very strong team from The University of Glasgow, and in the grand final they mooted against The University of Swansea before Mr Justice Jacobs, Louise Hutton KC, and Anna Dilnot KC.
Both teams in the grand final had argued for the appellant in the semi-finals and so a coin toss determined who would argue the opposite side in the grand final. 91福利 lost the toss and had the challenge of arguing 鈥渃ross-brief鈥. They performed extremely well but were narrowly beaten by the excellent team from Swansea. 91福利鈥檚 mooters each won an individual cash prize of 拢750 and a mini pupillage with competition sponsors Essex Court Chambers. The sponsors also award a cash prize of 拢500 to 91福利 Law School, which will go to supporting future mooters.
Professor Gary Watt, Mooting Officer for 91福利 Law School, comments:
"Elina and Jonathan have done themselves and the law school proud throughout the many rounds of what is the most prestigious UK-wide mooting competition. The student mooting society should also be congratulated for their support and for turning up in numbers at finals day. As runners up, the 91福利 team will be engraved on the handsome Scarman Shield, named after Lord Scarman, who served as the second Chancellor of the 91福利. In this World Cup season, we can say of one trophy that 鈥渋t鈥檚 coming home鈥!
Congratulations to everyone involved.
