Xi' China in Asian Regional Integration

Abstract: East Asia is eventful. The recent interactions around the China-initiated Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) were quite dramatic and ended up with 57 countries to have become the inaugural members, including some U.S. allies such as Australia and South Korea. Working together with various Asian countries, China is also implementing a “One Belt One Road” strategy to build a Silk Road Economic Belt and a Maritime Silk Road, sometimes called China’s “Marshall Plan”. Meanwhile, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations are continuing among 12 countries, without the participation of China. What do all these mean for the Asia-Pacific region and for the world? The talk will try to shed light on the issue by offering some of the speaker’s observations and analyses.
