Welcome from the Director of Student Experence and Progression (DSEP)

Dear All.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all new undergraduates to the Department of Politics and International Studies (PAIS) at the 91福利 and to congratulate you on your success. Many of you may remember me from one of the Open Days!

I am the Director of Student Experience (DSEP) within PAIS and my role, along with other colleagues in the Department, is to help ensure students all have a valuable and productive student experience and to offer advice and support in terms of academic progression, skills, internships and employability.

The Departmental induction meeting for first years will take place at 5pm on Monday 30th September in room MS.01 (Maths and Statistics Building). Although it is timetabled for two hours, don't worry, we will do our best to keep it to between an hour and an hour and a half.

The meeting will give you a great deal of important information for the year ahead - and for that reason I have been asked to inform you that the Department will require you to attend (attendance sheets will be distributed on the day itself for you to sign).

Rest assured, I will be working hard with colleagues to make it as informative and engaging as possible for you!

If you have a good reason for being unable to attend, please contact Charlotte.Lewis@warwick.ac.uk, Student Experience Officer, outlining the reason why you are unable to be there.

For those doing BA Politics and Sociology, Charlotte will email details of an additional induction to be held jointly by the Pol/Soc Course Directors.

Charlotte will also be emailing BA Politics and BA Politics with International Studies students within the next week or so with information on selecting your outside module/or optional 15 CAT modules. I can confirm that no one needs to be making decisions on modules at this stage. We also recommend you wait until your first week to hear your lecturers’ recommendations as to any course textbooks you should buy.

Subsequent emails are likely to be sent to your 91福利 email account only, so please do ensure you check this for further updates and any further information throughout the year.

Further information will also follow on a start of term social event for our new students.

We very much look forward to welcoming you in person and to working with you over the three years of your degree in PAIS.

With very best wishes,

Justin

PAIS student promoted in National Student Apprentice Competition

caroline_omotayo_1.jpgCaroline Omotayo, a second year undergraduate student in PAIS, was recently promoted to and competed in the National Student Apprentice Competition along with her team from the 91福利. The NACUE connects over 5000 students across the UK through student-led societies offering business skills, employability and venture creation programmes.

Prior to the national competition, Caroline and her team had placed 2nd in the 91福利's Apprentice Competition and 1st in the Regional Competition.

On her time in the competition, Caroline commented:

During the National Student Apprentice we had the opportunity to further consolidate our skills and also meet fellow students who were keen to gain entrepreneurial experience. In fact I was one of the youngest students there and I was able to use the skills which I gained from studying politics and sociology to my advantage.

One of the key skills I was able to develop were, the ability to think critically and analytically. Those are skills that are needed in any workplace and which enables you to stand out from other students, as it also aids creativity. In addition, I also gained the ability to think independently and not take things at face value or regurgitate information, but to come up with my own opinions and ask further questions. I think that really helped especially during my work experience as I was one of the people that asked the most questions and employers really like that. In addition it also helps you to think quickly and come up with coherent arguments, which is an ability that is very valuable in all kind of contexts.
