Jennifer Quigley-Jones awarded a Kennedy Scholarship
Jennifer Quigley-Jones, a BA History and Politics graduate, was recently awarded a Kennedy Scholarship on 9 July at the Kennedy Memorial Trust Reception, held at the Institute of Mechanical Engineers in London.
The Trust has been sending British post-graduates to Harvard and MIT since the academic year 1966-67. In the past, one 91福利 graduate was successful: Giles Edwards, Kennedy Scholar at the Kennedy School of Government 1998-99. This year, two 91福利 students were awarded a Kennedy Scholarship, including Jennifer and Oliver Newth (Engineering) for the MA in Engineering (High Performance Structures) at MIT.
Jennifer reflected on her time at PAIS and how it had an impact on her Kennedy Scholar application:
I am thrilled to begin my Master's in Regional Studies of the Middle East at Harvard as a Kennedy scholar. The support of three professors from PAIS - Alexandra Homolar, Miranda Alison, and Trevor McCrisken - massively influenced my application. My time at PAIS has really made me value how much caring tutors can change the course of your life. Without their excellent support, I think I would be a far worse candidate, thinker, and person.

Civitatis International Global Thinking Summer School
The Department has received news of an exciting opportunity!
'The Civitatis International Global Thinking Summer School will be a once in a lifetime opportunity for aspiring young leaders to examine a range of global challenges and solutions of concern to Heads of State, The Club of Rome and human civilization as a whole. The School is also great for career development and will include a session on careers and will give constructive advice on how to get a job in politics.
The questions the School will address are: How to get a job in politics? What are the Global Challenges facing humanity today? And how can the next generation of future leaders face up to these challenges and devise solutions? The format of learning will go beyond academic styles and instead engage students in a real life policy environment. This will include skills training such as formulating briefing papers in a practising think-tank environment. We will encourage students to verbally present a paper to their fellow students to give them experience of a real briefing format. Learning will be facilitated by interactive discussion rather than lectures and will help to further develop students’ career skills. There will also be the opportunity for evening social events in the City of London.
Due to numerous requests we have extended the Summer School and now have extra places available. Further information on the Global Thinking Summer School, the deadline for applications and information on how students can apply is available online at '
Seminar Series - From The Ground Up: Women's Roles In Peacebuilding
On Wednesday 5th June, PaIS were lucky to welcome Lee Webster to give a talk as part of our Seminar Series.

Lee Webster is Policy and Advocacy Manager at Womankind Worldwide, a women's rights and international development NGO, and has an MA in Gender and Development from the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex.
In the lecture she examined the roles that women play in mitigating conflict and building peace at local level in Afghanistan, Liberia, Nepal, Pakistan and Sierra Leone. She showed that despite their active contribution to peace at local level, women are still marginalised from formal peace negotiations. The session explored how Womankind used new research, media and public pressure to influence the UK Government's policy and practice on women, peace and security.
Lee was also kind enough to answer questions afterwards.
