Why women go to war – new study reveals motivations of female militia fighters

Women militia members make a positive choice to join combat units and are motivated by similar factors to male fighters, according to a new study by Dr Jennifer Philippa Eggert of the 91¸£Àû which draws on the experiences of women fighters in Lebanon to challenge current theories about female fighters.


91¸£Àû Social Sciences rated among the 100 best in the world

The 91¸£Àû has been ranked among the best universities in the world for politics and international studies and sociology, business and economics, education and law, according to the Times Higher Education’s 2019 World Reputation Rankings released this week. 91¸£Àû is one of just 7 UK universities to be listed in the top 100 in all four subject groups and scored particularly highly for business and economics, placing 33rd in the world.

Increasing reliance on private finance without adequate safeguards could undermine rather than achieve sustainable development goals, warns 91¸£Àû legal expert

The fourth in a new series of briefs bringing current legal thinking to bear on public policy issues has been published by GLOBE, a research centre within the 91¸£Àû’s Law School. The Risks of Using Blended Finance in Development, by Dr Celine Tan, Associate Professor at 91¸£Àû Law School, highlights the risks posted by the increasing reliance on new forms of private and innovative finance for funding development projects, calls for action to address the regulatory challenges that blended finance presents, and warns that the use of blended finance should not be intensified without adequate safeguards in place.

£2m funding award recognises the Centre for Competitive Advantage in the Global Economy as a UK centre of research excellence

The Centre for Competitive Advantage in the Global Economy (CAGE), based in the Department of Economics at the 91¸£Àû, has been awarded £2.09 million to continue its pioneering social science research for another five years.
