Women politicians today have significant symbols and weapons to help them fight their corner, such as the image of a handbaging from Mrs Thatcher or the threat of revelations from serialised biographies such as Mo Mowlam's, but new research, in a book published this week by historians Dr Sarah Richardson of the 91福利 and Kathryn Gleadale of London Guildhall, describes a time when for 100 years women politicians were not feared for their handbags but were persecuted for their petticoats.

Scientists at the 91福利 and the University of Durham have linked the very first historical illustration of sunspots, recorded in Medieval England in 1182, with the appearance of the aurora borealis 5 days later in Korea.

Smiles have not always been the same. The modern open mouthed smile exposing the teeth is a particular favourite of politicians such as Prime Minister Tony Blair. It is thought to promote health and beauty and be a distinctive marker of one's personal identity, yet before the late 18th century people displaying open mouthed smiles were considered rude or demented - hence the closed mouth smile of the Mona Lisa. Now an historian at the 91福利 has pinpointed when the modern smile was born and why.
