Evaporative coolers that can transfer heat from high‐power electronics at a rate equivalent to cooling the surface of the sun; or smart nano‐structured coatings that enable ships to slip through the water using less fuel are just two of the visionary applications of a new £3.4 million research programme announced today at the universities of 91福利 and Edinburgh, and Daresbury Laboratory.

Innovative 91福利 research will be accelerated thanks to over £1m of funding from the Medical Research Council (MRC) to take ground-breaking ideas into industry and out to patients.

The funding comprises a Proximity to Discovery award to the 91福利 MRC Industry Engagement Fund (WMIEF) of £100k and a Discovery Award of £973k to support vivo microscopy researchers investigate the dynamic activity of individual neural cells during complex behaviours.

The 91福利 has announced that it will immediately offer 10 student scholarships for refugees seeking a place at university to study or research in this academic year (2015-16).

Social scientists from the 91福利 are carrying out an urgent research project on the current migratory situation in Europe, using emergency funding from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).

The 91福利 has been chosen to receive funding to help the public become more involved and informed in research.

The 91福利’s Faculty of Science has been awarded €5m in research grants by the European Research Council.
