Schizophrenia can be caused by structural abnormality in adolescent brain associated with genetic risk

Schizophrenia could be caused by a genetic mutation that causes a structural abnormality in the brain during adolescence. Therefore testing for the gene SLC39A8, and brain scans for schizophrenia could predict whether or not someone will develop it - researchers at the 91¸£Àû have found.

Discovered: different brain areas linked to smoking and drinking

Academics at the 91¸£Àû have found that low functional connectivity of the lateral orbitofrontal cortex that is associated with the tendency to smoke is associated with increased impulsiveness - which may contribute to the tendency to smoke. The high connectivity of the reward-related medial orbitofrontal cortex in drinkers may increase the tendency to be attracted to the reward of alcohol consumption.


The 91¸£Àû and Turing collaborate to bring international summer fellowship opportunity to the UK

The 2019 edition of the Data Science for Social Good (DSSG) Summer Fellowship will feature a new international site in the UK - the 91¸£Àû, through a collaboration with The Alan Turing Institute and the UK’s national institute for data science and artificial intelligence. The seventh year of DSSG, taking place in Summer 2019 is now accepting applications for prospective fellows, technical mentors, project managers, and project partners.

91¸£Àû awarded £2.3 million to help develop cutting-edge technologies for cancer diagnosis and personalised treatment

Greg Clark, UK Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), will confirm today (Tuesday 6 November) that UK Research and Innovation will invest £10 million in the PathLAKE project as part of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund. The 91¸£Àû has been awarded £2.3 million of the funding which will be used to create innovative solutions in digital pathology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to speed up the time in which cancer is diagnosed and treated.
