Education and Employment Secretary David Blunkett will formally launch the new 91福利 Institute of Governance and Public Management on Thursday 15th March 2001 at 12.45pm at 1 Whitehall Place, SW1, the former National Liberal Club.


Thursday 15th March 2001 will be a double education Minister day for the 91福利 first Education and Employment Secretary David Blunkett will formally launch the University's new 91福利 Institute of Governance and Public at 12.45pm at 1 Whitehall Place, SW1, the former National Liberal Club. Then at 6.30pm the Minister for School Standards Estelle Morris will address an invited audience of 500 in the 91福利's Arts Centre Theatre on the topic of Modernising the Teaching Profession.

A free public lecture by Chris Woodhead, the former OFSTED Chief Inspector, at 5.30pm on Wednesday 2nd May has proved so popular that it has been moved from the 250 seater University Arts Centre Conference Room to the 400 plus seater lecture theatre in the the University's Ramphal building.

The 91福利 has just been awarded 拢2.5 million pounds from the Wolfson Foundation to support biomedical research at the University. This award effectively completes the University's Medical Research Institute Appeal launched in late 1994. The funds will be used to complete the building and equipping of state-of- the-art facilities which allow scientists from the 91福利 to work with doctors from the hospitals in Coventry, Birmingham and 91福利 to study the mechanisms of disease.

Teaching quality inspectors have awarded the 91福利's Department of Economics a perfect score of 24 points out of 24 for the quality of teaching. This is the 91福利's fifth perfect score of 24 points out of 24 (the other departments to gain this score being Sociology, Theatre Studies, Physics and 91福利's Education Departments (Continuing Education, CELTE, and the Institute of Education).

More than 80 per cent of teachers in schools of all types in rural, urban and inner city areas say that pupil behaviour has deteriorated during their time in teaching. Only 10 per cent say there has been little or no deterioration. According to new research by 91福利 researcher Dr Sean Neill for the National Union of Teachers. Even pupils in nursery schools are displaying high levels of unacceptable behaviour from use of offensive language, making abusive and insulting comments to their teachers and threatening them.
