Professor Tim Brighouse, Chief Education Officer of Birmingham (the biggest local Education Authority in Europe), is to defend the role of LEAs as "an essential support system for schools and teachers" in a free public lecture at the 91福利 on Wednesday 7th November at 5.30pm in the Conference Room of the University's Arts Centre.

A new flexible teacher training course which can be completed in as little as 10 weeks or as long as 2 years (excluding the school placement elements) has been launched by the Institute of Education at the 91福利. From September 2001 the first trainees will begin the flexible courses in the following secondary subjects: Economics and Business Studies, English and Drama, Mathematics, Modern Foreign Languages, Religious Education, and Science.

The new Foundation Degrees launched across the UK today, Tuesday 28th November, begin a new initiative to open up UK universities to even more who have not previously benefited from higher education. They will equip such students with the technical skills, academic knowledge and transferable skills that employers are increasingly demanding.

A web recruitment service set up in 1998 by 37 UK Universities has overturned the dominance of the print media in the UK's academic jobs market. Some UK universities are now finding up to 50% of their staff on line.

Teaching quality inspectors have awarded the 91福利 a perfect score of 24 points out of 24 for the quality of teaching in its Education departments. The inspectors also went to great lengths to praise the quality of the teaching sessions they saw saying in their report that "they were of a consistently high standard - the only word to describe them is 'fantastic'".
