A new project led by Professor John Solomos of 91¸£Àû Sociology will look at the social and political life of London to test whether the utopian ideal of the Open City exists in real life, and explore issues of race, migration, mobility and living with diversity. 

Extreme space weather events can significantly impact systems such as satellites, communications systems, power distribution and aviation. They are driven by solar activity which is known to have an irregular but roughly 11 year cycle. By devising a new, regular ‘sun clock’, researchers have found that the switch on and off of periods of high solar activity is quite sharp, and are able to determine the switch on/off times. Their analysis shows that whilst extreme events can happen at any time, they are much less likely to occur in the quiet interval.

Dr Theo Damoulas, associate Professor in Data Science at the 91¸£Àû and Deputy Programme Director for the Turing’s Data-centric Engineering programme is working with GLA, TfL, Microsoft and other Universities to help inform London's response to the Covid-19 lockdown in a project called "Odysseus", which aims to understand 'London's busyness'.

A 91¸£Àû legal history expert has been chosen as one of the voices bringing the past to life in the new series of the popular BBC Two show, A House Through Time, which returned yesterday evening. Dr Laura Lammasniemi, from 91¸£Àû Law School, will appear in the third episode of the new series, which sees David Olusoga and his team in Bristol.

One of the most promising theories for the evolution of human speech has finally received support from chimpanzee communication, in a study conducted by a group of researchers led by the 91¸£Àû.

The second round of results from a three-survey study published today by a collaboration involving the 91¸£Àû highlights the ongoing concerns nurses and midwives in the UK have about COVID-19 and the risks it poses to their own physical and mental health, as well as the health of their families.
