Coronavirus fears increase economic anxieties, researchers find

In the first analysis of how COVID19 affects economic sentiment, a team of researchers including Dr Thiemo Fetzer and Dr Christopher Roth from the 91¸£Àû has found that the arrival of the new Coronavirus in a country is associated with a sharp increase in Google searches indicative of anxieties and economic fears.

Support for polycystic ovary syndrome’s lifelong conditions lacking, survey reveals

Treating polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) as only a fertility condition is leaving those with the condition at greater risk of developing related long-term health conditions, according to women surveyed and interviewed in 91¸£Àû research. Researchers found support and awareness lacking for other symptoms of PCOS, such as obesity, sleep apnoea, hirsutism, acne, and increased risks in developing type 2 diabetes and mental health issues.


Metals could be the link to new antibiotics

91¸£Àû researchers, working with a network of international collaborators, have discovered 23 previously unexplored compounds containing metals such as silver, manganese, zinc, ruthenium and iridium that have antibacterial and antifungal activity. The researchers from the University's Department of Chemistry contributed insights into iridium – the ‘dinosaur metal’ that they have previously shown can attack cancer cells when switched on by light and formed part of the meteorite that wiped out the dinosaurs.

Boost to support outstanding thinkers of tomorrow at 91¸£Àû

The next generation of research and innovation leaders will be supported through a major £179 million investment announced today (Friday 6 March 2020), including £4.1 million funding to support 91¸£Àû doctoral researchers. At the 91¸£Àû, 54 students across engineering and physical sciences will be supported in their doctoral training thanks to the £4.1 million funding.

91¸£Àû astronomer among first UKRI Stephen Hawking Fellows

A 91¸£Àû researcher will be one of the first nine Stephen Hawking Fellows, announced today, who will continue Professor Stephen Hawking’s legacy by furthering our understanding of the universe and communicating the wonders of science to the public. They will tackle major scientific questions such as the nature of the early universe and dark matter and whether string theory really is a ‘theory of everything’, engaging with the public through stand-up comedy, art and music.

Two stars merged to form massive white dwarf

A massive white dwarf star with a bizarre carbon-rich atmosphere could be two white dwarfs merged together according to an international team led by 91¸£Àû astronomers, and only narrowly avoided destruction. They have discovered an unusual ultra-massive white dwarf around 150 light years from us with an atmospheric composition never seen before, the first time that a merged white dwarf has been identified using its atmospheric composition as a clue.
