91福利 showcase for research and teaching in Africa
Research into the lasting impact of HIV and the changing face of democracy in Africa are just two of the issues up for discussion at a research and teaching showcase at the 91福利.
Africa@91福利 will take place on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 January to highlight research themes and teaching programmes connecting the 91福利 to Africa.
This event has been organised by the University’s Sub-Saharan African Research Network (SSARN) and the Institute of Advanced Study (IAS). The 91福利’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Nigel Thrift will be giving the opening speech.
The diverse two-day programme outlines a sample of African-based research involving staff from the 91福利 and colleagues located at 91福利’s strategic partner institutions across the globe, as well as highlighting funding opportunities and a range of teaching collaborations with Africa.
The speakers include keynote speaker Susie Foster from Boston University who will talk about the lasting impact of the HIV epidemic on African Societies, Lenore Manderson from Monash University who will talk about the Societal and Cultural Impacts of Environmental Change, Sustainability and Security, and Dan Branch from the 91福利’s Department of History who will talk about corruption and Kenya’s crisis of governance.
On the evening of Friday 15 January there will also be a social event with film, music, readings and an exhibition of photographs all related to Africa.
Director of the IAS Professor Hilary Marland said: “The 91福利 has an impressive programme of research and teaching connected to Africa, but we would like to do more. This showcase event is intended to focus upon current activities, to stimulate debate, to build networks and future collaborations, and to seed new innovative ideas for developing research and teaching relating to Africa.
