91¸£Àû Live Labs

Jack and his team of elves (facility users) attended the Live Labs before the 91¸£Àû Christmas lecture to show off how light interacts both with itself and the natural environment. Visitors got to see the effects of interference, absorption and emission, and a festive treat with the aid of diffractive optical elements. We even had a tornado!

Ultrafast Spectroscopy Symposium

Join us in January 2025 for a FREE one-day symposium on Ultrafast spectroscopic techniques. In conjunction with the 91¸£Àû analytical Science Centre (WASC), this event event aims to allow students to get the most out of the techniques and learn best practices from technical and academic experts, as well as an opportunity to share how these techniques have enabled their research.

Curious Adventures in Colour and Light

91¸£Àû University researchers, Dr Jack Woolley – facility manager of the 91¸£Àû Centre for Ultrafast Spectroscopy and Dr Sofia Goia – research fellow in CiMAT WMG, set up to showcase the power of light and demonstrate how light can help scientists to uncover the inner workings of chemical reactions happening all around us at the atomic level through a workshop held at Compton Verney Art Gallery in 91¸£Àû. Through some fun experiments, audience members were able to learn about current research work performed at 91¸£Àû University through an interactive laser interferometry experiment. Moreover, visitors were able to learn about sunscreens and how they work, along with examples of UV-active compounds found in everyday products and put their imagination to test with exciting ‘invisible’ UV-active ink drawings.

The Equipment Sharing Fund allows researchers, PhD students and Research Technical Professionals (RTPs) to access cutting-edge research equipment, not available in their home institution. Funds cover the cost of initial analysis, helping to strengthen collaboration opportunities and ensure value for money within the UK’s research and innovation ecosystem. The fund opens for three rounds and will provide the full economic cost (fEC) or TRAC rate directly to the facility.

WCUS attends the Central Laser Facility User meeting

James and Jack attended the Central laser facility users meeting to learn about the projects that they have been working on in the last year. Some of our own work featured also as Junn presented his research into diamond defects. Junn's WCUS measurements have been augmented with some 2D-IR results taken at the Ultra Facility.

Celebrating 10 years of the RTPs

Wednesday 18 September 2024, 9:30am – 12:00pm – In-person event

Location: FAB0.03 Lecture Theatre - Faculty of Arts Building

91¸£Àû the event

The Research Technology Platform (RTP) Department is hosting an event to celebrate 10 years of the RTP programme.
We invite members of the University to join us as we showcase how the RTPs have grown over the past decade and
facilitated innovation in research and development at 91¸£Àû and beyond.

91¸£Àû the RTPs

91¸£Àû’s RTPs provide an integrated network of world-class facilities and expertise that enable researchers to
perform outstanding science. In 2024 we are celebrating 10 years of the RTP programme, which has grown
from 5 RTPs when it first started in 2014, to 13 RTPs and 70 dedicated staff members today.
The RTPs are open to access for researchers across the University as well as external clients from industry and academia,
supporting innovation at regional, national and international scales. Each RTP is operated by a dedicated technical team
who are experts in their fields and provide bespoke advice, analysis and training. Visit the RTP website.
