DESCRIPTION:Chair in Emerging Technologies The Academy’s Chair in Emergin
 g\nTechnologies scheme aims to identify global research visionaries and 
 provide\nthem with long term support to lead on developing emerging tech
 nology areas\nwith high potential to deliver economic and social benefit
  to the UK. Support is available for a 10 year\nperiod. Awards will be i
 n the region of £2.8m. Funding for PhD students can be requested as part
  of the\nfinancial package. The Academy’s Chair in Emerging Technologies
  scheme aims to identify global research visionaries and provide them wi
 th long term support to lead on developing emerging technology areas wit
 h high potential to deliver economic and social benefit to the UK. We wi
 ll now be opening this prestigious call every year and hope to appoint 7
  new Chairs in Emerging Technologies in the 2018/19 round of application
 s. By covering employment costs for the Chair\, the award enables sustai
 ned focus on advancing the technology to application in a strategic mann
 er over a period of up to 10 years. The Academy is not prescriptive in d
 efining the focus of Chairs\, except that they require a powerful case t
 o be made for the value of an extended long-term vision through to appli
 cation\, and hence for funding that provides sustained support for a wor
 ld-leading researcher\, ensuring continuity of their focus across other 
 grants and contracts and removing any expectation of duties that do not 
 support the technology programme. It is often the nature of an emerging 
 technology that its potential is not widely appreciated until championed
  by a visionary individual who can set out clearly the opportunities it 
 offers. Thus\, this call is deliberately broad and open\, and we encoura
 ge applications that make a case for disruptive innovation in well-estab
 lished areas or overlooked fields as well as new emerging technologies. 
 Applications are welcome from across a broad range of engineering and te
 chnology areas including research topics currently considered basic scie
 nce\, but which now require engineering ways of thinking to drive them t
 owards application and in more-established technology areas where the ap
 plicant has identified a high-impact novel approach. Similarly\, we are 
 not prescriptive about the Technology Readiness Level or similar assessm
 ent of innovation readiness expected of applications. However\, we do re
 quire a clear ten-year research vision underpinning the proposal that wi
 ll make a significant difference to how the emerging technology is taken
  forward and the consequential economic and social benefit to the UK. Th

 en and other groups who are currently underrepresented across engineerin
