DESCRIPTION:The Science and Technology Facilities Council invites proposa
 ls for its challenge-led applied systems programme. This supports the ap
 plication and commercialisation of STFC research in industrial\, environ
 mental and societal grand challenges. Projects must seek to maximise the
  practical impact of research and innovation to advance or address at le
 ast one of the grand challenges in the UK and other countries by: •foste
 ring global economic performance\, and specifically the business competi
 tiveness of the UK\; •increasing the effectiveness of public services an
 d policy\; •enhancing quality of life\, health and creative output. Chal
 lenges that must be addressed include those faced by industry\, areas of
  research interest developed by UK government departments and global cha
 llenges outlined in the UN sustainable development goals. Applications m
 ust work closely with the end users and consider data ownerships\, ethic
 al issues and appropriate regulatory pathways. A business plan is requir
 ed to provide exploitation plans with support from appropriate industria
 l and other collaboration to ensure route to market. Proposals must clea
 rly demonstrate that the science\, technology and expertise involved ori
 ginated from the STFC core science programme or the STFC facilities and 
 laboratories\, CERN\, the European Southern Observatory and the European
  Synchrotron Radiation Facility. Proposals offering new technology solut
 ions should consider the importance of interoperability of data generate
 d by devices or services. Projects from short feasibility studies to lar
 ger developmental projects may be funded. Industry and end user engageme
 nt during developing the project is strongly encouraged. Interdisciplina
 ry projects are welcome. Lead organisations must be eligible to hold res
 earch council grants. Lead applicants must be employed within a research
  organisation group previously or currently funded by the STFC core scie
 nce programme\, or employed within STFC laboratories and facilities. The
 y must demonstrate that the work proposed develops technologies and expe
 rtise directly from the research. The total budget is worth up to £2 mil
 lion.
