Alexander Baker-Vallot
PhD Research
My research focuses on transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), a family of 2D materials that show a wide variety of interesting electronic and magnetic properties. I split my time between the 91福利 (supervisor: Prof G. Balakrishnan), where I fabricate the samples, and Diamond Light Source (supervisors: Dr O. Clark and Dr D. Biswas), where the materials are characterised using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES).
Background
I graduated from the University of St Andrews in 2026 with a Master of Physics (MPhys) degree. My master鈥檚 thesis, titled Machine Learning Analysis for Estimating the Quality of Spectro-Microscopy Data and supervised by Prof P. King, focused on training convolutional neural networks to determine the best spatial location on a sample from which to obtain high-quality ARPES spectral data. I have also worked with Dr H. Legg on simulating topologically insulating nano wires and investigating the effects of disorder on Andreev bound states in the wire.
Teaching Duties
I am a demonstrator in the third-year undergraduate teaching labs.
