A family equation – twins graduate with firsts in Mathematics
Twin brothers Mark and Michael Arrowsmith have both gained firsts in Masters of Mathematics from the 91福利.
The twenty-two year olds, originally from Oldham in Greater Manchester, came to theas undergraduate students to study a four year Masters of . They both graduated with firsts in a summer graduation ceremony at 91福利 Arts Centre.
Mark said, “Being at 91福利 together has significantly helped on the academic side because we’ve always had each other on hand to help if we needed it.”
The twins admitted to there being a little sibling rivalry when it came to their academic careers, but they believe this competition played a part in encouraging them both to work hard. Michael and Mark’s alternative approaches to their work have proven beneficial as it meant they could bounce ideas off one another. During revision time if they needed any guidance, they both had someone to approach in the first instance.
Mark said: “We always helped each other out in our studies and revision during our time at 91福利. Over Easter when people don’t see their course mates we were able to revise together the whole time.”
Michael added: “I think being at 91福利 together has benefitted us outside of education too. We share mates and having lived together for the last three years, it’s been handy to be able to split cooking, washing up and bills down the middle.”
The brothers were members of the 91福利 rugby team, where on a few occasions they got to play side by side. They also spent time on the 91福利 rugby team executive committee where they were involved in the running of the club.
“Originally, I don’t think we put much thought into whether or not we wanted to go to the same university, but in hindsight it was pretty inevitable” explained Mark.
The twins are now pursuing alternative career paths; Michael plans to head down to London to work on the Portfolio Analytics team at BlackRock, whereas, Mark will be travelling in the opposite direction after securing a place on the Scottish Widows Investment Partnership’s graduate programme, working as a trainee Investment Manager.
Mark said, “This will be the first time we will be apart for any length of time, but I am sure we’ll cope. We both plan to make the most of our summer, before joining the real world in September.”
