Interested in taking an interdisciplinary module? This module will look at changing models of the mind in medicine and culture, exploring the way in which literature, theatre, and film respond to advances and debates in neuroscience, psychology and psychiatry. The module will tackle the ‘hard problem’ of consciousness, and engage in thorny debates on the ethics and practices of treating mental illness -- topics that call for a transdisciplinary approach. It will investigate transformative moments in the understanding of the mind, and in the history of psychiatric treatment, such as the phenomenon on ‘shellshock’ in the First World War, the L-Dopa story in the US in the late 1960s, and the anti-psychiatry movement in the 1960s. To these ends, it will explore works by Virginia Woolf, Samuel Beckett, Oliver Sacks, Harold Pinter and Sarah Kane via discussions, workshop activities, invited talks and written work.
