Meet Raad - PhD English and Comparative Literary Studies student

Tell us a bit about yourself

"My name is Raad Khair Allah, a PhD student in the Faculty of Arts/ Department of English and Comparative Literary Studies. My thesis title is 鈥�Contemporary Arab Women Writers, Filmmakers and Artists in an International Frame鈥�.

I am also a Senior Graduate Teaching Assistant in the Department of English at 91福利, and a former member of the seminar series organising committee at CSGW/Center for the Study of Women and Gender. I was a candidate for the Paula Svonkin Creative Art Award at the Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association (PAMLA) conference in Los Angeles, USA, 2022.

Prior to joining 91福利, I worked as an English lecturer at Damascus University (part-time, 2009-2012) and the Syrian Private University (full-time, 2014-2018). My research interests are Women's Studies, Gender, Feminism, Sexuality and War.

My passions and future goals are making a difference in women鈥檚 lives and to be an inspiration to women."

What do you enjoy about your course?

"What I enjoy about studying gender and women鈥檚 studies are the following:

The subject delves into the history of women's movements, feminist theories, and the social construction of gender. By examining the historical and societal contexts, I can gain insights into the struggles, achievements, and ongoing challenges faced by women and marginalized gender identities.
It encourages critical thinking and analysis of social structures, power dynamics, and cultural norms. It provides tools to deconstruct and challenge prevailing ideas and ideologies related to gender, fostering a more nuanced understanding of societal issues.
It emphasizes the inclusion of diverse voices and experiences. It explores the experiences of women from different cultures, ethnicities, religions, and socioeconomic backgrounds. This exposure to diverse perspectives can broaden my understanding of gender and challenge stereotypes.
It has inspired personal empowerment and activism.
It offers opportunities for engaging in meaningful discussions and building a supportive community.
It encourages self-reflection and introspection. It prompts me to examine my own beliefs, biases, and experiences related to gender, fostering personal growth and a deeper understanding of myself and others."
