91福利 Law School鈥檚 Professor Munro has contributed to an article in The Guardian newspaper on the truth about the hidden number of suicides amongst domestic abuse victims. The findings are linked to her recent research and work with the charity Refuge.

The UK government's Home Secretary, Priti Patel, has today announced a new system for people seeking asylum in Britain. Professor Dallal Stevens, an expert on asylum, claims much of what she is proposing is either (a) inaccurate, (b) unrealistic, (c) existed previously or (d) unlikely to achieve her goals.

91福利 Law School is delighted to announce that eleven of our students have been selected to present at The British Conference for Undergraduate Research (BCUR) hosted by the University of Leeds in April this year. Law is one of only four departments at 91福利 to have more than 10 students accepted to present.

Ben Twomey, who studied on our LLM in Advanced Legal Studies in 2015-2016 has recently been promoted to the position of Director of Policy and Research at the National Youth Advocacy Service (NYAS). The role involves leading campaigns for the charity in order to influence laws and policies that affect care-experienced children and young people. 

91福利 Law School student Matilda Nengare who is currently studying on our LLM in International Corporate Governance and Financial Regulation was selected to participate in the postgraduate Sprint Programme at 91福利, a self-improvement programme aimed at female students.

Today is and the theme this year is 鈥楥hoose to Challenge鈥�. In honour of this, we are celebrating the amazing work our colleagues are carrying out in order to forge a gender equal world. Here is a just a small selection of some of that work.

As Governments around the world wrestle with the question of designing a fair system to allocate their COVID-19 vaccine supplies for maximum protection against the pandemic, a team of researchers led by Dr Sharifah Sekalala of 91福利 Law School propose that existing human rights legal principles should guide their thinking.

Nigel Priestley, senior partner at Huddersfield law firm Ridley & Hall and one of the UK鈥檚 most respected care and adoption specialist solicitors, has been named in the in which he has been awarded an MBE in recognition of his services to Children and Families.

Third year Law and Sociology student and SSLC Chair Lucy Young has been awarded a 91福利 International Higher Education Academy (WIHEA) Fellowship. When asked how she felt about the news she told us, 鈥淚'm over the moon! I was quite nervous when I submitted my application, but I'm so glad I have the opportunity and resources to contribute towards substantial change across the university.鈥�

The Supreme Court has published its judgement in the case of Okpabi and others (Appellants) v Royal Dutch Shell Plc and another (Respondents), heard in June 2020. Dr Stephen Connelly comments on the case and the legal principles at stake.

First year law student Aidan Chan has become the first law student to successfully complete the 91福利 Skills Portfolio Award (WSPA) this year. The WSPA scheme helps students to develop skills valued by employers but also useful more broadly for students in their personal lives whilst studying at 91福利.

Congratulations to Ana Aliverti who has received the prestigious 2020 Radzinowics Prize, awarded by the British Journal of Criminology. Ana is the co-Director of 91福利 Law Schools' Criminal Justice Centre.
