While studying a module on Human Rights in Practice, four 91福利 Law students embarked on a human rights project which led to an incredibly successful petition- gaining nearly 60,000 signatures.

In an article published in Lacuna, 91福利 Law student, Helen Bates describes how her team began researching into sexism in the workplace to discover the scale and seriousness of pregnancy and maternity discrimination. Joining forces with Joeli Brearley, the founder of 鈥楶regnant then Screwed鈥�, they set up a petition that would extend pregnant mother鈥檚 legal rights to bring a discrimination claim to tribunal from 3 months to 6 months.

Millions of people in developing countries struggle to gain access to essential life-saving medicines for global epidemics such as AIDS and malaria. 鈥楽oft Law and Global Health Problems鈥� examines the different legal approaches that have been taken internationally to improve global access to essential medicines.

Professor Jackie Hodgson was asked to speak live on BBC Radio 4 last night about the recent events in Catalonia.

Following the Spanish government鈥檚 decision to impose direct rule on Catalonia, nine members of Catalonia鈥檚 suspended government have been placed in custody, accused of rebellion, sedition and the misuse of public funds. Their leader, however, Carles Puigdemont failed to appear in court, having fled to Belgium.

Last week, Professor Shaheen Ali welcomed a host of PhD students along to a Law School tea party, allowing them to share their experience and build supportive networks for the future.

Having secured funding from The Clark Foundation, 91福利 Law School鈥檚 Professor Vanessa Munro will join with Professor Sharon Cowan and Dr Chloe Kennedy from the University of Edinburgh in undertaking a Scottish Feminist Judgment Project.

Following the successful completion of similar projects in other jurisdictions, including England and Wales, contributors to the Scottish Project will re-imagine and re-write key judgments of the courts within that jurisdiction from a feminist perspective.

Dr Ana Aliverti has been awarded the Philip Leverhulme Prize to support her research into law enforcement.

The PLP is awarded to scholars who have made and continue to make significant and original contributions to knowledge in their field of research, and who have influenced their field sufficiently to have had an international impact. In 2017, up to 30 awards were made to UK-based outstanding research scholars within six subject areas, including Law.

The Prize will support Ana鈥檚 existing research on the novel configurations of law enforcement in a global age. She will spend the next two years researching police-immigration cooperation in domestic policing in the UK.

91福利 Law School鈥檚 Markus Wagner and LLM Alumna Hyoeun Yang both participated at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development High-Level International Investment Agreement, which took place from the 9-11 October 2017 at the Geneva Office of the United Nations.

The conference brought together delegations from dozens of countries, non-governmental organizations and subject matter experts. It took stock of sustainable development-oriented international investment agreement (IIA) reform and shared experiences of the countries that are undergoing such changes. Furthermore, it identified best practices for phase 2 of IIA reform, including substantive, procedural and institutional improvements.

Professor Andrew Williams has been shortlisted for a prestigious 鈥楥rime Writing Daggers鈥� award in the non-fiction category for his book 鈥�A Passing Fury鈥�. The book goes up against .

The book was described by the shortlisting judges as 鈥渁 compelling examination of how the war crimes trials at Nuremberg and elsewhere were imposed across the chaos and ruins of the Third Reich, interwoven with the author鈥檚 own travels, investigations and reflections.鈥�

A substantial grant has been awarded by the Scottish Government to fund ground-breaking research into the operation of the jury within the Scottish Criminal Justice System.

The team; which will include our own Vanessa Munro, Professor of Law at the 91福利 and Professors James Chalmers and Fiona Leverick from the University of Glasgow, will work alongside the independent research organisation Ipsos Mori, to explore three distinctive features of the unique Scottish Law System.

This study will provide vital insights into the operation of distinctive aspects of the Scottish Jury. It will involve several hundred members of the public observing trial reconstructions and participating as 鈥榤ock jurors.'

The Law and Development Research Network (LDRN) was launched on 22 September 2017 by nine founding institutions, including 91福利 Law School.

91福利 Law School academics, Dr Sam Adelman, Emeritus Professor Abdul Paliwala, Dr Celine Tan and Dr Sharifah Sekalala all participated in the signing of the LDRN Charter, which took place at the University of Antwerp. As a founding member, 91福利 Law School will play a key role in developing the network and organising activities and programmes under its umbrella.

The began in 2014 hoping to discover, celebrate and support exceptional young people from across the Commonwealth who are taking the lead in their communities and using their skills to transform lives. In only 3 years, there have already been two winners from 91福利 Law School.

Former LLM student Bukola Bolarinwa was presented with the award as recognition of her amazing work with blood donors, to help those living with Sickle Cell in Nigeria. She set up in 2015 to address the blood shortage in Nigeria and lack of regular donors. The organisation encourages people to get tested to know their haemoglobin genotype, carries out free genotype tests and has set up Sickle Cell clubs in schools to inform and educate young people about the condition. So far they have reached over 17, 000 people across the six area councils in Abuja.
